your favorite pantry items?

Hello friends-

I was asked to help with a cooking night for our Young Women and for part of the night we will be discussing "stocking your pantry" and what you need as far as basics in a kitchen. Many of the girls are moving away to college and don't have a lot of experience. So, I thought I would ask you experts and get more ideas than just mine. Please let me know your top 10 basic pantry items (you can do more if you want) and a gadget or two that you feel are "must haves" in a kitchen.
I think it will be fun to see what we get!

Thanks much-
Mel

For a college girl who doesn't have the time or money to do any gourmet cooking:
-canned soup
-canned tuna
-peanut butter
-canned veggies
-canned fruit
-pasta sauce
-dried pasta
-cake/brownie mixes
-canola oil
(This isn't a "pantry" idea, but I really liked having frozen chicken breasts on hand back in the day. Heck, I still do.)

And I love, love, love my kitchen scissors.

Good luck. Sounds like fun!

College pantry--

Dried pasta
Canned chicken
Canola oil
A little spice rack
Flour
Salt
Sugar
Garlic
Soup base
Rice

Must have: a hand mixer (college students must bake! Really!) and a very reliable omelet sized frying pan. Plus one very good cookie or brownie recipe--virtually memorized--that you can put together in ten minutes or less.

......? What?
Anyway, here are my favs:
* Pasta, various kinds
* Condensed soups
* Flour, several kinds
* Sugars
* Various sauce and soup mixes
* Cake and brownie mixes
* Yeast (keep in fridge)
* Energy bars (these are great for a quick meal or to grab in an emergency. We have a box of Cliff bars for our 72 hr. kit)
* Olive Oil
* Various vinegars (basalmic, red wine, apple cider, etc.) They make easy salad dressings, marinades, and sauces.

Oh, favorite kitchen tool? My E.D. snips. I try to cut everything with scissors and Dan was afraid I was going to hurt myself, so he bought me a pair of the ED scissors that cut through everything. They're the best kitchen shears EVER!

When I was in college I lived on Sandwiches and Cereal. I would buy apples and include that in my lunch. As far as pantry foods, I would raid my mom's cupboard for canned fruit and veggies, muffin mix, spaghetti sauce, mac and cheese, brownie mix, and other such things.

One thing my roomies and I always had on hand were ingredients to make cheese pizza. It was a really easy, quick reciepe, let me know if you want it.

I think you need to make sure you have a can opener and plenty of mixing spoons.

ramen noodles
ramen noodles

favorite appliance...a toaster. toast and hot chocolate! yum!
